Welcome to Castle Mound Camp site
Fillongley
|
Castle Mound campsite is located in the small Warwickshire village of Fillongley, 7 miles north-west of Coventry. The village appears in the Doomsday book and George Elliot, the famous novelist, was born only 4 miles away at South farm, Arbury. Within the campsite grounds and from which it takes it's name stand the ruins of an 11th century stone castle originally built in Fillongley as the main " Manor House" of the De Hastings Family. After falling into disrepair, now all that remains of the castle are it's mound, a few stone foundations and it's clearly defined, but now dried up moat. The campsite consists of the camping filed (with in woodpile), large enough for over 100 campers, with an adjoining activity field ideal for many team games and Guiding activities. The main campfire circle can be found towards the south of the activity field. Across the stream from the activity field is the mound itself. The ruins and moat provide a unique environment for many varieties of trees, wetland and marsh plant life with many examples of wild flowers. The mound is therefore, perfect for studying wildlife as well as for more energetic activities and games but we ask campers not to light fires or erect tents here as we wish to preserve this area. Facilities available within the site include a large toilet block with disabled access and a separate unit for adults or male campers of staff. Behind this are two further buildings. The first is a 24ft by 10ft kitchen/dining block, providing cooking facilities with an electric cooker, microwave, toaster, fridge, freezer, water heater, lighting and heating. The last building is a 32ft by 10ft dry shelter for storage or wet weather activities. |
