Child safety

Girlguiding UK enjoys an excellent reputation for providing a safe environment for its members to enjoy activities, whether indoors or outside.

All our adult Leaders follow clear safety guidelines and undertake a Leadership Qualification. And many do additional training in play-work and youth-work.

Are criminal-record checks carried out on adults helping at units?

All new Leaders and those who have unsupervised access to girls and young women are asked to agree to a check through the Criminal Records Bureau (CRB).

In addition to criminal-record checks, all volunteers are asked to complete our Warrant Reference (W/R) form. This involves:

  • Providing two referees who can confirm the volunteer’s suitability to work with specific age groups.
  • Disclosing any criminal convictions involving children and/or young people or involving dishonesty/deception.
  • Signing a declaration that they agree to abide by Our Safe from Harm Policy.

When a volunteer has been with us for three years, he/she is asked to complete a renewal form (W/ren), which, once again, requests details regarding any criminal convictions.

Costs involved

Guiding is a value-for-money way of providing a range of exciting and challenging activities for your daughter. The costs involved are outlined below.

If you feel you may have trouble taking part in guiding for financial reasons, please speak to your local unit’s Leader as some assistance may be available.

Clothes and books
During her first few meetings while your daughter is trying out guiding she does not need to have any guiding clothes or books. It is up to you and your daughter's unit Leader to agree when it would be best for her to start wearing her guiding clothes and using her books.  Click here for details on our shop and opening times.

‘Subs’
Guiding units charge 'subs' to cover costs like equipment and the hire of the meeting place. These can be paid  each term. There is also an annual subscription (which may be included in the subs) which is paid to cover the day-to-day running of the association.

Your daughter’s unit Leader will be able to tell you about the amount as well as how and when you would be expected to pay. For events like camps, holidays or adventure days, an extra charge is usually made.

If you pay income tax, your daughter's Leader can use Gift Aid to claim 28p for every £1.00 you give in subs or donations. Please ask your unit Leader for further information.
